We have reached the edge of the cliff, are we going to join the lemmings or stand our ground?

Welcome to Monday, November 3, 2008 from deep in the heart of Texas. Tomorrow is judgment day at the ballot box all across our land. There is a long held myth that lemmings, the small rodents, actually commit mass suicide when they come to the edge of a cliff. While this is not the truth, they do go off the cliff urged on by their homing instincts and peer pressure as more and more of their brothers and sisters exert force on them. Huge numbers die as a result. This is similar to the mass migration of African animals that have to cross crocodile infested rivers and streams to get to their grazing lands. Sooner or later that instinct kicks in along with the herd crowding in, and they have to jump. Some make it but many fall prey to the waiting crocs. Tomorrow many will succumb to this herd mentality and will essentially go off the cliff together. I fully support their right to do so in our form of government but I do hope that each one will seriously consider their values before they mark their ballot, pull that lever, or punch that card.

I’ve made it clear throughout this year’s campaign that I have been most unhappy with the choices presented to us in this cycle. However, for those who have any notion of conservative values, the choices could not be clearer. While I lament over those representing my own party, I must do what conscience dictates since to do otherwise would help elect the most liberal individual who has ever sought our nation’s highest office. Some have thrown in the towel in disgust and said, “How could it be worse?” To be honest, I do not even want to think about the answers to this question because in my opinion we could suffer a huge collapse of what little morality that is left in our national life. Don’t get me wrong. I am most unhappy with the lack of leadership offered by those in power over the past eight years. In many ways we have only ourselves to blame. But we now have to deal with the issue at hand and decide what we believe to be best for our nation without regard to our feelings about what might have been.

In the final analysis we who put our trust in the Lord our God must do exactly that, depend upon Him to see us through the outcomes that result on Tuesday, regardless of who becomes our next president. Our thinking at times causes us to forget that our God is with us in the bad times as well as the good. One of the things that concern me is how our children and our grandchildren and perhaps even ourselves are so ill prepared to have to deal with a great crisis, especially if it becomes one on a scale not experienced in our country for many years. God may allow within His sovereign will tough times to come to our shores but at the same time He is already there ahead of us to hear and respond to all who call upon Him. I pray that He will be merciful. I pray for every person who casts a ballot and their choices. I join all who agree in a prayer that one more time says, “May God bless the United States of America!” Amen. …More later.
