Happy Bird Day and Happy Birthday!

It's 6 a.m. and it's already a good day! We've already had our morning prayer together and my wife is now downstairs sipping her hot chocolate and watching the local news. I kind of slept in this morning and didn't roll out of bed until shortly after 5 a.m., but we are excited about the big day we have planned. Yes it is Thanksgiving Day and in our house the cooking will soon be well underway. It’s a wonderful day because overnight the temperature dropped into the high thirties and we, or at least I couldn’t be happier. I do love the cooler weather! I think the wind chill supposedly makes it feel like thirty degrees. What a way to usher in this wonderful time of family, food and fellowship! It’s the kind of day when a wonderful dark, rich, and strong cup of Community coffee seems to make everything in the world just a little bit better. I remember an African American computer operator named Enoch from back in the olden days who used to say he liked his coffee the same way he liked his women, hot, black, and sweet. Well, I don’t do the sweet but I will go for coffee (only) that’s hot and black! It’s a joke. You can laugh. No one will know.

Today is not only special because of it being our traditional family Thanksgiving gathering but it’s even more special because it’s our granddaughter Stefani’s 14th birthday. Wow! Seems like only yesterday she and I was doing research together on what it means to be a strong willed child. That’s an inside joke since I was her daily care giver when she was a very young child (1994), keeping her during the day every other week when I was in town from doing consulting work.

She’s turning into a young lady now and all the teenage stuff is in full swing. Her mom and dad are giving her an Xbox 360 gaming system. We are giving her a pink remote controller to go with it. My understanding is that she loves the Halo game series which is all about war and combat, so what’s up with that? But she has really made progress over the years and is well on her way to developing herself into a talented and resourceful girl.

She recently tried out for the basketball team at her school. She had never really played much and actually stuck around until the end before finally losing out to those who had more experience and training. I was so very proud of her for trying. Most would have looked at the competition and thrown in the towel but she didn’t, she hung in there and had she been able to be a little more skilled in her layups and shooting she might just have made it, on her first try, having never played before. Good going girl. You showed us all that you have courage and determination.

Her dad, our eldest son and his wife have given us three granddaughters and now they have become young ladies right under our noses. Our Tiffany will be 20 next April. Brittany recently celebrated her 16th back in the summer. And, now our Stefani is 14. I wrote in her card about the many wonderful memories we had from her and her sisters coming to spend the night with us. They used to love coming and we always had a ball together. Stef has always had a special spirit of enjoying our times together.

We are thankful to God for her and wish her the most wonderful birthday ever. Happy 14th sweetheart from your MiMi and Poppy. …..More later.
