We Never Know (and they don't either) What A Day Will Bring!

I’m one of those who is fascinated by how often those charged with making accurate predictions about the weather just absolutely miss it. Tuesday evening before bedtime we watched a telecast of what is supposedly the most accurate weather station in our area. He said there was a weather system off the Galveston coast but it likely would mostly only produce rain showers. Wednesday afternoon my eldest son called me and said, “Dad, where in the world did this tropical storm Humberto come from?” Good question.

Wednesday evening the same forecaster said if we would recall he did say the elements were in place for further development. However, I watched the previous show and I never heard anything about the potential for a tropical storm, or hurricane, which it is at this time, even as I write this blog. Man, we should all have jobs like these people.

We could just say that the elements were in place for a really good month but suddenly turned into something quite different. But that’s okay. Go home, get a good night’s sleep and come back tomorrow and make another forecast. Hey, that would be something if it worked like that in the real world! In fact, what irritates me the most is how that rarely, if ever, a totally missed forecast, where I’m talking about a 10% prediction turned into an all day drenching rain, is never even brought up the next day. Now that is what I call job security.

What adds insult to injury here is how each station says they have a more sophisticated tracking system than the others. Each year they announce improvements where they can detect a bird fluttering off the coast of Africa which might stir up a wind that could turn into a tidal wave which could produce the elements ripe for development, but they don’t know if we will have rain or sunshine locally tomorrow. I sometimes wonder with all their radar trained here and there if they mostly are just tracking each other.

No wonder the Spanish speaking stations on our cable have mostly beautiful women doing the weather. Might as well provide a nice backdrop and a pleasant view because they may have determined the forecast itself is anybody’s guess. The other interesting thing is to hear people talk about why they follow only a certain weather person. They only listen to this guy because he used to be head of the national hurricane center. Tell that to the foursome who were rained out on what was supposed to have been a beautiful day.

Jesus actually told a parable about weather predicting and He gave credit to those in his day for doing a pretty good job in their forecasting. Here’s what He said in Luke Chapter 12: 54) Then He also said to the multitudes, “Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is. 55) And when you see the south wind blow, you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is. 56) Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern this time?

He was, of course, contrasting their ability to predict the weather accurately versus their ability to predict the truth concerning His coming to offer salvation and eternal life to them. Sure, this makes clear there are much more important issues than things like trying to guess how the weather will be tomorrow. But at least He commended them for getting it right! Wow! We could sure use some of that around here. More later……………..
