When we lost our dad in January 1954 it was a very difficult time for us all, especially our mom. After settling in rural Louisiana and getting our new life started we lost a fine man who mom had been dating for some time. Willard died suddenly from a heart attack at age forty in 1959. He was a fellow who could do just about anything from plumbing to carpenter work. He lived with his sister and her husband about thirty minutes north of our little town and I can remember spending the night with him. He had his own living area and I’ll never forget he had a window air conditioning unit. Wow! You actually had to use cover in the summer time because of it being so cold. So this was how the other half lived, but alas it was not to be. I hate to admit this but we had so many funerals when I was growing up it seemed that having a casket in our front room was just a regular part of our life. Reason number 99 why I am as messed up as I am. Just kidding, I think!
Mom did remarry a number of years later but our new step-dad also passed away in November of 1967. People began to think we all were cursed since we had so many of our family who had checked out early. But we somehow made it through these rough times and in August 1977, my mom remarried and this past Sunday we paused to thank God for His goodness in providing us with such a good man for my mom and good step-dad to us all.
We can’t make sense out of all that happens in this life but we can be sure of God’s presence and His provision. While none of us would claim the same status of Job in the Bible, many other people did make that comparison in viewing the many trials we as a family have had to face. In fact, my wife was warned not to get mixed up with us because of our history. It will soon be forty-three years for her and we are not going to let her go back at this late date.
We could dwell on all our heartaches and it would not be hard to convince others that we deserve pity. However, that’s only part of the story. Job in his anguish declared, “The Lord gives, the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord.” We too can look at what little we know of the big picture and when we do we see something like a 30th anniversary and say: All the time, God is good; God is good, all the time.
Happy Anniversary number 30 to our most wonderful mom and dad and may God continue to bless as we all thank Him for them, and for His goodness. More later……………..
