It’s a cloudy Tuesday, October 14, 2008 and I am reminded of what a good friend who passed away a few years ago used to say every Sunday. He was the designated welcome person in our local congregation and he would always talk about how the sun may not be shining outside but the SON was always shining in our time of meeting together. Recently we have experienced many different evidences of that SON-shine in our lives and we are very thankful for each instance. The place where we are now staying is such a blessing. The way it became available and the graciousness of those involved has to be a God thing and we certainly give Him thanks for it. When we first began dealing with the damage to our home we immediately thought of our nephew from Florida who is a master builder and genuine craftsman. We wondered out loud about his availability. Then we had another nephew who is also an excellent builder from Louisiana who thought he and his crew might be able to oversee this work but he had some pending contracts that opened up and was not able to commit. Now the first nephew has contacted us and he might be available, therefore, we are working to get him over here to look at our damage. We count all of these things as being made available to us by the hand of God.
To be honest we’ve struggled with many days of little to no progress and we’ve wondered if and when we could ever get started. While patience is a virtue and we are admonished to wait upon the Lord, that’s not one of my prominent characteristics. My personality is such that it’s like the fellow warming up a meal in the microwave pacing impatiently because it’s taking so long. That meal would take a long time to do from scratch but two minutes in a microwave is way too long to wait! I do not know how all or any of these activities will turn out. But I do know that people far and wide are praying for us. From little kids to the elderly, from far away and near, we have been told by so many how they are holding us up in prayer. That in and of itself just knocks me down. Some of those who’ve mentioned this to us, like teenagers at our local Church, or people we are not well acquainted with, makes us aware that God is at work and we are blessed to be the recipients of His grace.
Some have expressed concern about the stress on our marriage. While we have been tense at times and no doubt snapped at each other a few times, we actually have been drawn closer by the challenges we are facing together. The place where we are staying doesn’t have the cable or internet connected at this time. I reminded my wife that back in 1965 when we moved into an apartment in Alexandria, Louisiana, we had nothing but a radio to listen to, and we entertained ourselves by playing cards and other games. I did get a small television hooked up last night to an amplified antenna and we are able to get five channels, not real clear, but clear enough to avoid me having to relearn how to play gin rummy. I am fortunate to have internet all day here at work. My wife will have to check her email at one of her friends until we can reestablish service either in our temporary home or back in our damaged place. As I recall, (but that was a long time ago), we actually enjoyed our time in that first apartment, therefore, life is always about adapting and making do with what God provides. In our case, He has done abundantly more than we could ever ask or think. Thanks for the prayers and keep them going, and we will do our best to give God the honor and glory for His provisions! Amen. ….More later.
