"My doctor told me to stop having intimate dinners for four. Unless there are three other people." - Orson Welles

Well, hello there, it's good to be back playing some tunes on my computer keyboard today. It is Tuesday, February 11, 2025, and, I bid each one a hearty hello from my place to wherever you happen to be. God is good. God is great. And, I do thank Him for even the next heartbeat since He is in control. Amen! I am a long term Type 2 diabetic which came calling nearly 25 years ago. Better put, that's when I discovered I am one. One of those God things. I went in to have my shoulder checked after injuring it loading up our car to be towed from Louisiana back to our home place here in The Woodlands, Texas area. (transmission gave up the ghost.) Shoulder check. Strained. Meanwhile, the doc said let's do a physical since I had not had one in a long time. We did. Bam! I wasn't a diabetic with training wheels, I was full blown. No way. Can't be. At any rate, here I am, all these years later still thanking God for the doctor who talked me into a physical. Yep. It did radically change my life. Finger pricks, medication, and, on and off again weight management. Recently, I tried to lose some again and it has helped. I'm talking about being down between 20-25 pounds depending on the week I weigh. I am still around 5 pounds short of my target but I do have an excuse for most of my fluctuation. Enter the scene at stage right one outstanding Southern style cook, none other than the wife of my youth. Last Saturday, she decided to do a feast. We invited the boys and those who could come to enjoy some homemade chicken and dumplings, made from scratch cornbread dressing, baked ham, English peas, cranberry sauce, homemade yeast bread and rolls, iced tea, and, let's also have apple pie and Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream for dessert. It was all melt in your mouth delicious. I knew better but I had seconds. Sunday morning is my weigh in. The previous weigh in showed me only 2-1/2 pounds away from my target. The one this past Sunday showed me to be back at 4 to 5 pounds away from my target. But, in fairness, let me say this about that: It is not my fault. Who plans a Thanksgiving Day feast in February? Right? I knew you would see it from my point of view.

We made a really good choice this past Sunday evening. Having heard all the hype we decided to watch the Super Bowl game. We had quit watching the NFL several years ago, but, we settled in for a couple of hours of the pregame festivities which were, to me anyway, as dull as it gets. The game finally started. We watched the first few plays, looked at each other, and asked, "Do we really care to watch this?" The answer was a resounding no, therefore, we went back to watching the Arkansas State Police chase down drivers who decided to make a run for it. Don't knock it. It's pretty interesting. Instead of talking about quarterbacks we focused on the legendary pit maneuver expert, (Pit: Precision Immobilization Technique), Arkansas State Trooper Jacob Byrd. Byrd is a twenty-something who has not only the training but also a sixth sense in how to disrupt a fleeing suspect even at alarming high speeds. His knows exactly where to hit the fleeing car and the results speak for themselves. He has a national following who watch his dash cam videos on various social media platforms. The wife, for some reason, loves watching car chases. She, also, for some reason, enjoys watching professional face slappers, especially when they knock their opponent senseless. And, for some reason, she really likes to see any loud mouth braggart go down, whether it is boxing or any other sport. I believe she just might be channeling something but I think for my own well being it's best to leave it at that. After all, I wouldn't want to cause any disturbance in the force that decides we'll have a Thanksgiving feast in February. You do know what I mean, right Vern? Y'all take care now, you hear? And always remember to be thankful to God. Amen.

I drink Louisiana Family owned Community Coffee because life is too short to drink bad coffee.

Good morning and welcome. Today is Monday, February 10, 2025, and, I woke up thanking God for another day. How about you? I am a coffee drinker. Unashamed. When we started out back in the day, (the mid 1960's), we bought whatever coffee was on sale, sometimes, in a tub. Some many years ago I came to realize life was too short. Today I drink Louisiana family owned Community Coffee typically in the k-cup style, dark and bold, intense blend. When we travel I can take along a one cup drip maker and a bag of Community. Yep. I am that serious. For over 20 years I ordered it directly from Community but recently I switched to Amazon and put it on an automatic order every three weeks, by the case. Not too long ago I had a fairly irritating bout with gout. Bout with gout. Rhyming not withstanding, I discovered that coffee helps to deal with this malady. I immediately upped my game. I increased my intake from 2 to 3 cups per day to 3 to 5 cups per day. Thanks to the internet recommendations because we all know that everything we read on the internet has to be true. Right? At any rate, the coffee, along with two different medications have helped manage the situation. And, I might add, the coffee along with a Monster energy drink help to keep me awake during Church services including choir practices. As Hillary reminded us, it does take a village of coffee and energy drinks to make things right. Or, something like that. If you don't get the reference look up Hillary and village and you will find it. Let me also be clear, I do not recommend anything I do to someone else because it just might be the wrong thing for them. I also appreciate the exercise I get from busting open coffee cases and then the cartons. Residual value all over the place!

I know that is more or less silly. I used the photo of Biscuit I took last week to demonstrate her role in our daily machinations. She is a wonderful pup who super loves people and especially one people. That would be me. I get reprimanded from time to time for doing for my great grands what I used to do for their parents, my grands. My wife often tells me I need to follow the instructions of the parents regarding what they can and cannot do or have. Really? But, I mostly do. Mostly. And, I quickly add my boys still wonder where that kind of treatment was during their growing up days. Getting all mushy, my friends, is a process. I do the same thing with Lil Miss Biscuit. She loves to eat off of my plate. I try to be careful what I give her but it's very hard to refuse that sweet whine. I think with me it's a condition I can actually pinpoint when it got fired up for real. Our first grandchild was born some 35 years ago. After that, we've added 10 more, and after that, 8 greatgrands, one dog, Sir Bentley, and now his successor, Lil Miss Biscuit. All of that contributed to my mushy-ness. Sad to say but the quote on the definition card might apply, "he gets as mushy as a Hallmark valentine". If this keeps up I may be first in line to turn in my 'man' card. Y'all get out there and have a good day and be sure to give thanks to God as you do! Amen.

"The Bible is not an end in itself, but a means to bring men to an intimate and satisfying knowledge of God, that they may enter into Him, that they may delight in His Presence, may taste and know the inner sweetness of the very God Himself in the core and center of their hearts." — A. W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God

Okay. I'm running a tad late this morning but with good reason. It's Friday, February 7, 2025, and, I hope all is well with you and yours. I was busy earlier making breakfast and rocking a great and grand. You know. I can chew gum and make breakfast and rock the baby. Still can. Thankful for that. I don't take it for granted. In fact, it doesn't take me long to look at photos where our friends are having a good time of food and fellowship to spot so many in the pictures who have gone on to their heavenly home. They are those who fit the description given by the Apostle Paul, 'the dead in Christ', those who are, 'absent from the body present with the Lord', (1st Thessalonians 4:16 and 2nd Corinthians 5:8). To be honest, I'm not 100% sure how all of that works but I 100% believe it because the Inspired Word of the Living God told that to us in the Book we call the Bible. I hear people say all the time they can hardly wait to be reunited with their loved ones. I can wait. But, I'm not so sure that will be our first priority upon us breathing our last here on this earth. Not sure. It's a great thought, and God knows I have plenty of those who by faith in Christ will be in 'that number'. However, all of that in its own good time. Right? My blogs have been viewed from all over the world by over 550,000 people, not counting those on my email list or others I have sent them to. Over 250,000 originated in the United States. The rest come from countries all over the globe. My point? My measly 550,000 is nothing compared to the millions gained in one posting by a celebrity. BUT, most of mine have something theirs do not have. Mine typically include something about my testimony and experience regarding how Jesus the Christ can change one's life. And, we do know that God can use even stuff like a verse in a blog to draw someone to Himself. I've told this one before but it's worth telling again. A Russian engineer worked on a tunnel project in Iraq many years ago. One day when he was checking the progress of the construction work he noticed something scribbled on the side of the newly excavated tunnel, John 3:16. He had no idea what it meant. When he returned to Russia he kept remembering that inscription. Finally, he checked around and discovered it came from The Bible. He went to a library and they helped him locate that verse. One thing led to another and that Russian engineer was gloriously saved. Wow! Do we serve a great God or what?

I cannot say that I am at my best yet in terms of communicating via this blogging venture, but, I am not as rusty as I was. No. It's not exactly like riding a bicycle which supposedly one never forgets. Really? I got on one a few years ago and thought I would ride like I did in my teens. I was wobbling all over the place. I looked like I was making a Charlie Chaplin silent comedy film. But, even though I proved how out of shape I was, I was getting a wee bit better when I returned. I can't promise my blogs will get better but I am enjoying sitting at the keyboard once again and giving them a good workout. Okay. It is Friday. That means many will be ending their work week. Here's what I have to say about that. Tomorrow is Saturday. Saturday is the last day of the week. Are you with me? This means Sunday is the first day of the next week. Why not starting out your brand new week by finding a local assembly (Church), that teaches the truth and attend, participate, and, dare I say, be blessed from on high. I know it's Super Bowl Sunday, but, the Creator of the Universe will meet up with you at Church, but, I can't promise He will speak to you during the football game. No. I am not one of those cartoon characters screaming 'get off of my grass', but, I sincerely know what can happen when one comes in contact with the Savior who said this as given to us in the Gospel of John 14, Verse 6: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Yep, knowing Him is a much bigger deal than anything this world might come up with. Meanwhile, have a great time of it, and, may God help us all. Why? Because we need it! We all do! Amen.

"Franchesca and Sharkey, my French bulldogs, have their own blog. And they are brilliant at it." - Martha Stewart

Hello. Today is Thursday, February 6, 2025, and, I am thankful to God for being able to rise and shine today or perhaps rise and partly cloudy, speaking for me, myself, and I. I used the quote from Martha Stewart because our pup who passed away, Shih Tzu Sir Bentley actually filled in for me several times in filling up space here in my blog. I thought you might enjoy a brief example from the blog Bentley wrote back in October of 2021.

Bentley here on this Thursday, October 21, 2021.  The man of the house, (so-called), has been playing tons of Christmas music, watching Christmas shows and movies, and getting all of his Santa gear together since they will be kicking off the season this upcoming weekend. I think he's trying to get into the mood. I've heard him say that's not so easy based on the high prices for any and every item on the planet. Meanwhile, I've been working on my own song. I hope you enjoy it. It's sung to the tune of the one you have heard all your life. What? Never heard it before? You would not be my target demographic for today's edition. Here goes:

You better watch out, you better not bark, you better not whine I'm telling you why, Santa Claus is coming to town. He's making a treat list and checking it twice, he's gonna find out if you're naughty or nice, Santa Claus is coming to town. He hears you when you're snoring, he knows when you're a pain, he knows when you tore up the bed, keep away from the pillows for goodness sake. His bag is filled with goodies, from rawhide chews to snacks, he knows which ones you deserve so be good for goodness sake. You better watch out, you better not bark, you better not whine I'm telling you why, Santa Claus is coming to town.

Hope you enjoyed that. I might just work on some others going forward, so, stay tuned. Your loyal pup, Signed: Sir Bentley Barksalot, Esq.

"The best news of the Christian gospel is that the supremely glorious Creator of the universe has acted in Jesus Christ's death and resurrection to remove every obstacle between us and himself so that we may find everlasting joy in seeing and savoring his infinite beauty. " - John Piper

Good morning y'all who are, perhaps by default, a part of the blogosphere which floats here and there and everywhere on the world wide web, www. It's Wednesday, February 5, 2025, and I send out a hearty hello from my place to yours. I'm not a huge follower of John Piper, pastor and preacher, but, I liked the truth and the wordiness of his quote and that's why I used it as my title today. Truth is, the Gospel is life changing for those who hear and respond by repenting of their sins and putting their faith and trust in Jesus the Christ and His finished work on behalf of the people of our God-created world. (God so loved.) I am thankful to God that He saw fit to equip me to teach His Holy Word. That is a privilege and He deserves any and all the glory. Why? Simply this, if God gives anyone a gift which enables them to accomplish the results of that gift, the Originator of the Gift deserves the honor, period. This is what the Apostle Paul told the members of the called out assembly meeting in Corinth, Greece, when they were fussing and fighting about their God given gifts. You know. The typical who's the head and who's the tail kinds of human conceit. Here's what he said, "For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?" (1st Corinthians 4:7) Ouch! In other words, if you received and are able to exercise a gift that was given to you by God, how in the world could any of us take credit for it? Yet, anyone can easily do just that when we end up seeking the applause of others instead of doing all that we do for the honor and glory of God. I need to be reminded of this. That's likely why I wrote about it. But, if the shoe fits....

Many are decrying the chaos brought on by our newly elected administration. Back in my early working sojourn, in the mid to late 1960's, I worked for the United States Air Force at England Air Force Base, Alexandria, Louisiana. I transferred from there to the nearby 512 bed Veterans Administration Hospital. After 18 months, I became an administrative assistant in the Public Affairs Office at Fort Polk, Louisiana. And, since I did in fact achieve permanent standing as a federal civil service employee, I can speak to my own observations as to why chaos is needed to address and deal with a thoroughly wasteful environment. It pretty much is ingrained. Every one who takes office as President says they are going to address the bureaucracy within our governmental system, but, not too many have ever been able to penetrate the Iron Dome which essentially allows this pernicious waste to insulate and protect itself. I could give you many examples of the waste I observed as a nobody in the system. That would only be a twinkle, twinkle little star in the galaxy of institutional waste and mismanagement. My opinion. Therefore, I say shake it, brother, shake it! Maybe, just maybe, some inroads will be achieved where veterans get real services provided instead of the so called service providers serving overhead and red tape as a priority instead. Maybe, just maybe, departments and divisions will not spend excess funds just to keep up their budget authority instead of actually needing the items being purchased. And, maybe just maybe, we, the America loving tax paying ordinary citizen will begin to not only hear about radical change but we will see the results. It will not be easy, but, I, for one, believe it is worth it. Bring on the chaos!

Sorry about that little rant, but, the Supreme Court often throws out cases because they rule the plaintiff does not have standing. In the area of wasteful spending on the part of our government, I do, you do, we all have standing. Just so you know. I could go on. But, you knew that already, right? The good news: God is still on His throne. He has say over it all. He does. He really does. May God bless us all as we continue our journey here on the planet. Amen.

"The average dog is a nicer person than the average person." - Andy Rooney

Good morning and welcome. Today is Tuesday, February 4, 2025. Last year we had to say farewell to our beloved pup, Sir Bentley Barksalot, Esq. We purchased him at 8 weeks and he was as good a pet as one could ever hope but alas, he developed a liver problem that could not be solved, therefore, we had to say goodbye after 5 years and 2 months. I couldn't believe I could be so devastated by the passing of a pet. You have to be kidding. But, I was, and I still am because Bentley had become a part of our family. My initial response said I would never go down that road again. Meanwhile, I was bombarded with advice about getting another dog soon. A few weeks after losing Bentley I was shown a video of a Shih Tzu mama dog with 5 puppies. The puppies were for sale. Supposedly, they were Shih Tzu Terrier mix. Our son, Jimmy and I drove into Houston to see the pups. The puppies were 5 weeks old but their mama couldn't nurse so they were being raised on goat's milk.  I held each of the pups and for some reason I picked the one we paid for, Lil Miss Biscuit. At five weeks she still had to be fed special milk and she is now the family pet. She is not Sir Bentley. The wife had Bentley trained in less than a month. Lil Miss Biscuit, well, she is a very slow learner so to speak, and at 10 months is still not trained. But, she makes up for any shortcomings in her exaggerated, over the top, love and affection for us all. She loves to love and she loves to be loved. As she developed I began to doubt their designation of her Terrier mix. She didn't seem to meet the profile. Because I wanted to know, I sent off her DNA to be tested. Well, get a load of this: She is a Shih Tzu Chihuahua. Oh well, the older lady who sold her was needing the money for foot surgery, and, in the meantime, Biscuit, regardless of her pedigree, had become dear to us all. We are still working on the training regimen mostly overseen by the lady of the house. She can operate in the drill sergeant mode while I'm mostly too sentimental to adequately discipline Biscuit. I'm kind of glad my grandfather, Paw Paw Mac, isn't around to see how mushy I have become. Think about it. He would have never, ever, under any conditions allowed a dog in the house. Now we have one in the house 24x7. Now it's regular vet visits, grooming appointments, and expensive monthly medications to keep Biscuit healthy. Oh well, the times, they are changing folks. They really are.

I hope today finds each one doing well. We know of so many who desperately need intervention from on high, that is, from our Father through His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, working in and through God the Holy Spirit. The verses on the graphic illustrate this: 1st Peter 5: "6) So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. 7) Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you." (from the New Living translation.) Let us encourage one another with our caring and our praying. Okay. I am going to stop for today. Do I have more to say? My grandfather used to wonder out loud when I would be coming up for air because I talked too much. However, in my mind I hear the wife telling me to shorten it up. By the way, if you think I use too many run-on sentences, check out some of the Apostle Paul's writings. Just so you know. Have a great day and may God be honored in how we go about our daily living. Amen.

“Memories have their purpose, and nostalgia is not a danger in small doses. It can be good to remember what has made us who we are, to reflect on what has made us stronger.” ― Rachel Harrison

Welcome back. Last time we visited was the end of the first month of a brand new year. Now we are off and running in the new month, today being Monday, February 3, 2025. Looking back. Reminiscing. Remembering. These are all things I enjoy doing. Sure. The quote above is well taken. "In small doses". One can be obsessed by the past and as is often said they end up living in the past. None of us can go back and change anything. If I could I certainly would. There have been plenty who have made it clear they have no regrets and nothing to correct or change. Not me! But, at the same time, I didn't get to where I am based on tomorrow. I am the sum total of my lifetime experiences. Some of these are so painful they make me shudder just to think about them. Growing up, my family spent far too much time peering into the caskets of the earthly bodies of our loved ones. If I told you all about these recollections you might easily conclude that it's little wonder I'm as messed up as I am today. You would be correct. However, even in those times of grief and sorrow our family huddled together, made our way forward, and became stronger and closer. Tough times produce tough people. Sounds good. Right? I might have considered myself tough at one time but now tear up at the drop of the hat. (Another dated reference: The idiom "at the drop of a hat" originated in 19th century America. It's used to describe doing something immediately, without delay, or without much thought. The phrase likely comes from the practice of signaling the start of a race or fight by dropping a hat or sweeping it downward. This custom may have been Irish. For example, you might say "We were ready to pack our bags and go on vacation at the drop of a hat". ) Enough of this for now. I will have much more to share going forward. And, unless you have wondered, this looking back is a major theme of my musings and I you should know I do not go back to see if I am repeating myself. Why? Because I'm pretty sure I am.

I also returned to this blogging venture in hopes that it will help to keep my mind functioning. I put a period there because if I attempted to call out a level I most certainly would have some to argue with my effectiveness. I used to tell my staff that if they didn't set any targets or goals they were sure to hit them every time. My guess is there are some of them still pondering that one. But, I am serious about trying to operate at the best I can be at the age I have achieved. I will not list for you the ways in which I know I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer anymore. That's right. At one time I might have offered some proofs trying to argue that point. Not anymore. I will share this one. Nothing grabs hold of you like when you know you are right only to find out you are completely wrong. I don't need the directions because I know exactly where that is located. Wow! This is not the correct address at all. I may have accomplished good mileage and good timing but what good does it do if you don't get to the right place? I wish I could say that was someone else's experience, but, yes, that's my hand in the air. It's me, it's me, it's me oh Lord, standing in the need of prayer. Therefore, I will leave it at 'to keep my mind functioning'. Now where did I lay my glasses?

Well, as they say, a good time was had by some. As Willie Nelson postulated in the song he wrote, "My, Ain't It Funny How Time Slips Away?" To that I say, you can sing it again brother. Time. God gave it to us for a reason. Here's what Brother Moses left to us:

Psalm 90

A Prayer of Moses the man of God.

1)Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
2)Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

3)You turn man to destruction,
And say, “Return, O children of men.”
4)For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.
5)You carry them away like a flood;
They are like a sleep.
In the morning they are like grass which grows up:
6)In the morning it flourishes and grows up;
In the evening it is cut down and withers.

7)For we have been consumed by Your anger,
And by Your wrath we are terrified.
8)You have set our iniquities before You,
Our secret sins in the light of Your countenance.
9)For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh.
10)The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11)Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
12)So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

13)Return, O Lord! How long?
And have compassion on Your servants.
14)Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,
That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!
15)Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us,
The years in which we have seen evil.
16)Let Your work appear to Your servants,
And Your glory to their children.
17)And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
And establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands. (NKJV)

 Okay. That does it for today. Know that God cares. May He add His blessings. Amen.
