This is Monday, October 5, 2009 and I am thinking about it being our eldest son’s birthday. Forty-four years ago today a couple of kids, literally, figuratively, and any other way you might describe it, (she was 18 and I was 19) were blessed with our firstborn child, Chris. He has a daughter who within a few months will give birth to our very first great granddaughter. It is hard to even imagine all of this but we are so thankful to God for Chris and what he means to us and to our entire family. As a little tyke he was the recipient of much of our trial and error approach to child rearing. I had huge expectations of him then and he no doubt felt the burden of always having to be an example to his brothers and in achieving the potential we always recognized in him. Somewhere and somehow through the grace of God he came through with some amazing abilities and he has taken them and with God’s blessings he has used them to make a good life for his family.
Our three sons are all very different and we are thankful they each have developed into skilled workers, able to provide for their families. Chris has always been a leader type of person and the go to fix it guy even when he was a little fellow. I know at one time I was thought to be smarter than the average bear (Meaning a real bear, I’m sure.) but I certainly missed out on many of the intuitive abilities he ended up with. I’ve never been inclined to like mechanical stuff and he excels in it. He was an automotive fanatic as a teenager and piled up hot rod magazines like they were worth gold. Today, the rule around our house is that if Chris can’t fix it, you might as well get a new one. Our greatest joy is to see our children develop a life of service and devotion to God. Chris has a good solid track record in this area.
He is our firstborn. He and Sherrie produced our first grandchild. And now he has shown a devotion to us that gives us confidence as we face our sunset years in our sojourn here on the planet. From time to time my wife tells me that she wouldn’t know what she would do if something happens to me. I always remind her that her boys will be there for her and especially Chris. We are not ready for the back pasture yet but we are thankful to know our children care. Chris, thanks for all you do to assist us in so many different areas. Your dad could have, should have, but didn’t learn much about how things actually work, therefore, having you help keep everything from our furnace to our computers going is a tremendous blessing. Happy Birthday son, and may God continue to bless you. Amen. Love, Mom and Dad. …..More later.
