See, we are making progress already, it’s Wednesday, August 6, 2008. Birthdays have always been a pretty big deal in my family. I know some folks who do very little to recognize birthdays because that’s how they were raised. That’s their call and I respect it but for me I enjoy continuing our tradition of making a little noise to celebrate the life of one of our family members. Today is the 10th anniversary of the birth of our twins, Alesha and Amanda. These girls, like all our grandchildren, are gifts from God and we pause to thank Him for them today.
They are quickly becoming young ladies and will soon cross over that invisible bridge that takes them to that place where they become a little less thrilled to spend time with their Poppy. I took that pretty hard the first time it happened but I now understand it is just another phase in their development. What’s a Poppy to do given this situation? Enjoy every hug and kiss today. Let them lay all over me while they watch TV, and soak up all the blessings God has given through them to me. They are not identical twins both from a physical birth definition and as demonstrated by their completely different likes, dislikes, and personalities.
Our senior pastor also has his birthday today. I often tell him how fortunate he is to share his birthday with our twins. He might with good reason ask if it shouldn’t be the other way round with them being privileged to share his birth date since he is older. Now I would never be rude to a man of the cloth but he should understand, since he’s also a grandfather, that a Poppy’s point of view and perspective is highly prejudicial. In the end, let the record show that it is he who is fortunate to share his birthday with these girls!
These two have brought tremendous joy into our lives. They are truly something else! We pray for them every day because growing up in this world with all of its pressures is not easy. Yeah, we look back and like all grandparents, we wonder how the years could get away from us so quickly. One day we stare down at them in their crib and the next we hear them talking about fashion for the upcoming school year. And, so it goes with them just like it is supposed to go and we end up feeling so blessed to be a part of their lives, to observe, help shape, and enjoy them as the gifts they are! May God bless Alesha and Amanda on this, their 10th birthday! Amen. ….More later.
